Week of April 20th

This past week in class we made more progress on our Station North projects. On Tuesday Marc Steiner came into our class and we went over the progress that we have made for our projects. Along with going over our projects for our class, two other classes joined us. Each individual class is focusing on a specific part of Baltimore and during this class session not only did our individual section go over the two projects we are building but the other class showed us videos of what they have recorded . Our homework for the past week was to listen to specific recordings and pull out again common themes that we noticed from other recordings that we listened to. I was asked to listen to the first 22 minutes of Jonathan Green. From listening to his recording it was clear that he felt that Station North has gotten safer within the past few years. At the 9 minute marker, Green said that people no longer had to walk backwards in Station North implying that one can now walk the streets without looking over their shoulders every few minutes. In class on Thursday each individual listening group got together to discuss what we found to be common about the recordings. Towards the end of class the class collectively discussed the themes that we were seeing across the board. The voice group discussed after class how we wanted to break apart the new recordings that we had acquired. With less than 2 weeks left of the semester, I'm beginning to feel the pressures of making sure everything is completed properly and is given my best effort.

Walking to Station North

On April 9th a good porition of students along with our professor went to Baltimore specially Station North. We first went to Lexington Market where it was clear the amount diversity in such a small amount of space. Within the space in the market, I saw many different ethic eateries and heard many different dialogues floating around.

From Lexington Market we walked down to Station North making some minor stops along the way. On our way to Station North we stopped at library and ran into a guy who was selling fresh produce on a horse drawn carriage.

From the horse drawn carriage we finally made our way to our destination. At Station North the groups split and a couple of us walked around talking pictures. While walking around it was clear to see the things that Jasmine Simmons was talking about. Many people were sitting around on benches but they weren't going inside the stores.

Week of April 13th

This past week, we all worked on our projects. On Tuesday, the two different groups: MAPS and the Voices gave a presentation on how far we had come with our projects. The MAPs group gave a good report as to how far they have come in  their contact list and the map that they have created with specific places in Station North. My group, the Voices talked about how we have some recordings on our Gthoogle drive and how we created the ask. At the end of our presentation, our group knew that we needed help in making sure we get everything done.By the end of the our class seassion, the MAP group was reassigned to helping the Voice group. We parceled out each of the recordings we had so far. My role on this Tuesday was taking the paper that had the sign ups of who wanted to listen to which recording and ensuring that each recording had a good amount of people working on it. After class me and Harima sat down and restructured who would listen to what and made sure that the recordings were parceled out evenly. I made sure that there was at least one member from the Voice group that would be the contact/ team leader for the specific recording. After ensuring that the table we created was accurate and that everyone had been assigned, I emailed Dr. King so that she would be in the loop about who was listening to what. In class on Thursday the entire class went through and talked about the major themes that each listener seemed to notice. We began to realize that the major themes noticed was about how Station North is changing by every passing day.

Week of April 6th

This past week in class was definitely interesting and different. Our projects on Station North are in full swing and everyone is being really diligent about keeping up with the tasks at hand. For class this week we read a couple of articles about Station North. I really liked the article Arts Districts Without Artists. I thought that the article did a good job of explaining how there aren't many artists that live within the district that is labeled an arts district. This article explained a lot of the issues that Jazmin touched on in class. When she came to talk to us, she brought up the idea that many people living with the district aren't able to actively participate and this article. Along with discussing the articles the class worked on their group project. The class had decided that on Thursday a group of us would take the shuttle service down to Station North. Some of the class decided to go on Saturday and stayed on campus. The group that went went to Lexington Market first and were able to take everything in. Some people bought food while others took pictures to capture the authenticity of the market. From there we all walked down to Station North and broke up in groups. A couple of people went to Sofi's Crepes and got some food. While walking to Station North itself, we were able to stop and take some pictures of the murals on the wall along with other scenes.

Week of March 30th

This past week in class we dove right into our projects. My task was to make sure that the ASK flyer that we would be giving out to the people we want to interview was correct grammatically and informationally. While reviewing our flyer in class one of my fellow students remembered that we had forgotten to put on the flyer that interviews would be aired on the radio. In order to ensure that participants knew that they might potentially be on the radio, we added the disclaimer which reads "with expressed permission, photographs and recordings may be taken during each interview and published online". We also realized that when talking to participants we should ask them prior to interviewing them if they were okay with being represented online. My other task that was given to me to start towards the end of the week was transcribing Ben Stone's interview and pull out parts that I think would be good for our radio piece. I'm excited to go into Station North this week and see some of the places that we have discussed in class.
